Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about the Course & Test?

How do I get a replacement certificate if I lose my original?

If you lose your certificate, or enroll with an invalid shipping address that causes your certificate to get undelivered, you must order a replacement certificate and pay a $10 admin fee. To order a replacment certificate, do the following:

  1. Login to this site.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. Click the orange Order Now button.

Once logged in, check your mailing address under your dashboard's My Information tab. Confirm or correct your address and confirm or add a Parent’s name in the "Parent/Legal Guardian" field. Click Save at the bottom of the page.

Providing a valid mailing address is critical to receiving your certificate in a timely manner. Your replacement certificate will be mailed to you within 2-7 business days.

Can my certificate of completion be emailed or faxed to me?

Unfortunately, no. The DMV does not allow it. These are official DMV documents and are numbered so we cannot fax or email them. It usually only takes a few business days to most anywhere in California for the certificate to reach you and your certificate is usually sent the same day you pass.

The most critical thing YOU can do to ensure that your certificate arrives in a timely manner is to make sure you have provided us with a correct shipping address during enrollment. You can check and update your shipping address, once enrolled, on your dashboard's My Information tab.

How old do I have to be to take this course and test?

To take this online driver education test, we recommend you be at least 15 years old. The California DMV will not issue a learner's permit until you are 15-and-1/2 years old. The online driver education certificate (indicating you passed the test) is required for getting a learner's permit. Once a person turns 18 years old, the DMV does not require a learner's permit to get a driver's license. Therefore, this online driver education test is appropriate for people between the age of 15 and 18.

By making this online driver ed course available without having to register and pay a fee, you, the student, as well as your parents, can see what you are buying in case you do decide to purchase it. You can also revisit it at any time without logging in, and can enjoy going over it with friends and family members easily and review items you may not fully understand.

Can Online Driver Ed be taught effectively?

Think an online Driver Ed course can't possibly be effective for teaching driver education? Think again!

A DMV study [Acrobat PDF] comparing online driver education to paper-based workbooks and classroom courses finds the following:

Home-study computer-based instruction may actually be more effective than classroom instruction for teaching the basic knowledge objectives in early driver education courses given that home-study courses:

  • remove distracting classroom influences from peers,
  • may increase parental involvement in their children’s online driver ed instruction,
  • may be more beneficial for teens who are at the highest risk, and may benefit from the novelty of using modern, interactive, and self-paced teaching and testing technology

Students who completed the courses involving computer-based and internet instruction performed better on the study exit examination than did students in the workbook and classroom courses. The findings in this regard suggest that using interactive technology to teach driver education resulted in superior learning, consistent with recommendations by some traffic safety researchers for improving the effectiveness of online driver ed in general.

Online Driver Ed courses can be effective in improving student attitudes about safe driving. The use of interactive technology has been recommended by some traffic safety researchers as a way of improving the effectiveness of online driver ed in general, and these findings provide support for this view. The DMV itself now offers a DMV practice test online. See the full study for details:
