Why do you provide this course for free?

We truly believe that we have the best Driver Education courses in the state. The DMV evidently agrees with us, because they have authorized our classroom course to be purchased for use by other driving schools. Over 70 schools throughout California are currently using our course. Many high schools, public, private and charter, do not have an approved or accredited driver education class, and so we make this site free for them to use as a resource in their own classrooms.

Statistics show that driving is a dangerous business -- especially for teens. We want you to be well prepared and, above all, safe when you get behind the wheel.

By making this course free and without registering, you, the student, as well as your parents can see what you are getting, can go back at any time without "logging in," and you can enjoy going over it with friends and family members easily and review items you may not fully understand. Start our Free Course now...

Can Driver Education be taught effectively online?

Think an online course can't possibly be effective for teaching driver education? Think again!

A 2003 DMV study [Acrobat PDF] comparing online driver education to paper-based workbooks and classroom courses finds the following:

  • Home-study computer-based instruction may actually be more effective than classroom instruction for teaching the basic knowledge objectives in early driver education courses given that home-study courses:

    • remove distracting classroom influences from peers,
    • may increase parental involvement in their children’s driver education instruction,
    • may be more beneficial for teens who are at the highest risk, and may benefit from the novelty of using modern, interactive, and self-paced teaching and testing technology

  • Students who completed the courses involving computer-based and internet instruction performed better on the study exit examination than did students in the workbook and classroom courses. The findings in this regard suggest that using interactive technology to teach driver education resulted in superior learning, consistent with recommendations by some traffic safety researchers for improving the effectiveness of driver education in general.

  • Computer courses can be effective in improving student attitudes about safe driving.

  • The use of interactive technology has been recommended by some traffic safety researchers as a way of improving the effectiveness of driver education in general, and these findings provide support for this view.

Does this course satisfy DMV requirements?

Yes, our online Drivers Education course is a DMV-approved course. Our course is equivalent to a regular 30-hour classroom course. Any driving school must, by law, have a course that has been examined and authorized by the Licensing Operations Division of the DMV. View our DMV approval letter (Acrobat PDF).

There are many Internet Driver Education courses for you, as a teen, or parent of a teen, to choose from. How can you know which ones are good from those that are put up by entrepreneurs eager for your money? It isn't easy. Read our consumer alert (Acrobat PDF), which explains the DMV process further and warns you about unscrupulous Internet driver education sites.

How long will it take for me to finish the program?

It depends on your pace. You don’t have to take the whole course in one sitting. You can exit a lesson without finishing it and pick up where you left off when you return.

However, once you start the final test you must finish it in one sitting so that you can submit the score at the end. If you don't pass, you can retake the test as many times as you need until you do pass. There is no time limit for passing the test.

How do I get a duplicate certificate if I lose my original?
