9. Turning Right

When making a right- or left-hand turn:

  • Scan the intersection and the roadways entering it for pedestrians and bicycles as well as vehicles.
  • Be aware of controlled lanes and directional signals and planning your vehicle?s position before and after the turn so as to avoid a collision or blocking traffic.
  • If your view is blocked, yield and move very slowly until you have good visibility.
  • If there is a bicycle lane, you must use it to make a right turn and don't enter it more than 200 feet before the turn.
  • Remember that cyclists have the right-of-way and do not cut them off.
  • You may never make a right-hand turn on a red arrow.

  • To safely turn right, you should get close to the right edge of the road (watching for bicycles or motorcycles between your vehicle and the curb).
